Giclee (pronounced Zhee-Clay)
prints are now
the preferred method of reproduction for signed and numbered
limited edition prints of paintings. The painting is first
photographed and the photo converted to a digital image. Fine
art photographers use their own photo instead of a painting to
produce fine art prints of their work.
After the image is digitized the it then has to be adjusted to match the original artwork as
closely as possible to accurately reproduce that artwork in archival
pigmented inks printed on a matched archival paper.
The chemistries amongst these ingredients
makes this an complex and difficult process so an absolutely exact
match is seldom achieved. Paint pigments simply are different
from the archival pigmented inks, which then change again
according to the chemistries of the chosen paper. However, once
this process is properly completed, a beautiful reproduction of
the chosen painting can be produced.
These prints are usually made as
needed, the "print on demand" process. The artist
signs and numbers the giclee print and also the accompanying
certificate of authenticity.
The giclee prints that RiverStone
Gallery offers are created with some
of the most stable and reliable pigmented archival inks
available. If handled in the same way one would handle any other
work of art on paper, they will provide lasting pleasure.
