About the Earth Spirit Prints

Bern Sundell has been painting this skull and antlers in the Earth Spirit series ever since his father, a forest ranger, found a natural deer skull with antlers lying in the forest.

Bern uses it, not as a symbol of death, but of celebration and renewal. Sometimes he adds colorful ribbons to make a more dramatic statement of celebration.

The softly weathered look of the delicately shaped bones inspired a series of paintings that resulted in these wonderful giclee prints on canvas.

Bern notes that the structure of the antlers allows a great use of spatial relationships as the shadows fall across the background. Bern also employs his favored abstract geometric shapes to further establish the feeling of space in the paintings.
